Fashion in the 1900-1930's: Change
As the 1900's approached, the fashion world began to change new products and styles immersed. The Victorian style was still used in clothing- the frills, buttons, and bows were seen as elegant for a woman to wear. Ines Gaches-Sarraute, a researcher of health and medicine, created a new type of corset apart from the health-damaging corset of the 1800's. This one focused less on the stomach and more on throwing the hips back and lifting the butt to still create an hourglass shape without causing problems. However, after complaints of the stomach seeping through the bottom of the corset and it's pain in women, she changed it to yet another one. This one slimmed the stomach and lifted the boobs and butt. This, however, created back pain despite it's popularity among women. The corset soon began to disappear as the 1920's arrived.
The fashion style in the early 1900's was long dresses that were bell shaped at the bottom (due to the corset underneath), and puffy sleeves. The blouses were loosely tucked in and the dresses were filled with frills ad intricate designs. As 1908 hit, many ditched the Victorian style and went for the New Woman look which contained tailored suits, simple long dresses, and hats. The hourglass corset remained despite the changes in clothing styles.
As the 1920's began, the income of the wealthy increased and young women started to rebel against their mother's way of dress. During World War I, as young men left jobs for women, they grew stronger in patriotism and took jobs. After World War I, women felt stronger, and the new young generation rebelled against old tradition. Skirts got shorter and more skin was shown, hair was cut short, makeup was worn more, and women went to dances and parties. The women dated more and many found it hard to return to their old ways. They were given the name "Flappers". The Roaring Twenties fashion had begun and shaped the way how women dressed in the future.
In the 1930's, women's styles started getting much simpler and makeup more common. Women were seen in movies, so celebrities used their looks to stay famous and rich. Retro curls was a common style among women, and many women dressed classy. As beauty started getting more and more popular in the product world, may new makeup items were created and advertised since women began to rely on makeup and creams to look good. This started many makeup companies to create more advanced products in the future to help women obtain their beauty.
